Skye was born on May 5, 1988, to Deirdre and Greg Sweetnam. She was named after the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Along with her sister, Aurora, and her brother, Cam, she was born and raised in the small town of Bolton, Ontario, where she studied dancing and singing from a young age. She began singing at the age of 5, performing for family members and friends. By her early teens she had moved on to songwriting, recording a demo with the help of a local Bolton music school, Rumball Music Studios. Sweetnam was also a full-time Regional Arts Program student at Mayfield Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario, majoring in drama, but within months of arriving at the school in Grade 9, she dropped out to pursue her career. Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

The secret of heaven is kept from age to age. No imprudent, no sociable angel ever dropt an early syllable to answer the longings of saints, the fears of mortals. We should have listened on our knees to any favorite, who, by stricter obedience, had brought his thoughts into parallelism with the celestial currents, and could hint to human ears the scenery and circumstance of the newly parted soul.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Yes, as my swift days near their goal,
    ‘Tis all that I implore—
Through life and death, a chainless soul,
    With courage to endure!
    Emily Brontë (1818–1848)
