Ski To Sea Race

The Ski to Sea Race (S2S), widely known as the Ski to Sea, is a seven-legged, 100-mile (160 km) long, multi-event competition held on Memorial Day in Whatcom County. The race starts on the ski slopes of Mount Baker, a 10,800-foot (3,300 m) volcano, and ends at Marine Park in Fairhaven, on the shore of Bellingham Bay. The seven legs of the race are: cross country skiing, downhill skiing, running, bicycling, canoeing, mountain biking, and finally kayaking. The Ski to Sea Race is managed by Whatcom Events, with a race committee that includes a race director, a race coordinator, and one or two chairmen to oversee each event, along with hundreds of volunteers and student interns.

Famous quotes containing the words ski, sea and/or race:

The goal for all blind skiers is more freedom. You don’t have to see where you’re going, as long as you go. In skiing, you ski with your legs and not with your eyes. In life, you experience things with your mind and your body. And if you’re lacking one of the five senses, you adapt.
Lorita Bertraun, Blind American skier. As quoted in WomenSports magazine, p. 29 (January 1976)

Generation on generation, your neck rubbed the windowsill
of the stall, smoothing the wood as the sea smooths glass.
    Donald Hall (b. 1928)

As a thinker and planner, the ant is the equal of any savage race of men; as a self-educated specialist in several arts, she is the superior of any savage race of men; and in one or two high mental qualities she is above the reach of any man, savage or civilized.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
