Siraj Ud-Daulah

Siraj Ud-Daulah

Mirza Muhammad Siraj ud-Daulah (Urdu: میرزا محمد سراج الدولہ‎, Bengali: নবাব সিরাজ উদ-দাউলা), more commonly known as Siraj ud-Daulah (1733 – July 2, 1757), was the last independent Nawab of Bengal. The end of his reign marked the start of British East India Company rule over Bengal and later almost all of South Asia. He was sometimes called, and his name rendered, "Sir Roger Dowler" or "Sir Roger Dowlah" by some of his British contemporaries, and "Sau Raja Dowla" by John Holwell. However these distorted early English renderings, among others like "Sepoy", were rebuked and ridiculed by later writers.
