Simpson Desert Conservation Park

Simpson Desert Regional Reserve is located in South Australia, 957 km (595 mi) north of Port Augusta. In combination with Simpson Desert Regional Reserve and Witjira National Park, it forms a protected area representing one of the world's best examples of dunal desert. A wide variety of desert flora and fauna are protected in a landscape of varied dune systems, extensive playa lakes, spinifex grasslands and Acacia woodlands. These trees soak up water from underground water springs.

In an unprecedented move, access has been closed over summer in 2008-2009 due to excessive heat

Famous quotes containing the words simpson, desert, conservation and/or park:

    The man who married Magdalene
    Had not forgiven her.
God might pardon every sin . . .
    Love is no pardoner.
    —Louis Simpson (b. 1923)

What though the traveler tell us of the ruins of Egypt, are we so sick or idle that we must sacrifice our America and today to some man’s ill-remembered and indolent story? Carnac and Luxor are but names, or if their skeletons remain, still more desert sand and at length a wave of the Mediterranean Sea are needed to wash away the filth that attaches to their grandeur. Carnac! Carnac! here is Carnac for me. I behold the columns of a larger
    and purer temple.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A country grows in history not only because of the heroism of its troops on the field of battle, it grows also when it turns to justice and to right for the conservation of its interests.
    Aristide Briand (1862–1932)

The label of liberalism is hardly a sentence to public igominy: otherwise Bruce Springsteen would still be rehabilitating used Cadillacs in Asbury Park and Jane Fonda, for all we know, would be just another overweight housewife.
    Barbara Ehrenreich (b. 1941)
