Silver River State Park - History

History

The area that comprises the state park was purchased by the state in 1985 to maintain the natural environment of the area in the face of booming real estate development. The Silver River runs through the center of this 5,000-acre (20 km2) park. The spring head is still run by the private company "Silver Springs Nature Theme Park" but the rest of the entire 51⁄2 mile spring run is completely pristine and undeveloped.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

[Men say:] “Don’t you know that we are your natural protectors?” But what is a woman afraid of on a lonely road after dark? The bears and wolves are all gone; there is nothing to be afraid of now but our natural protectors.
Frances A. Griffin, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 19, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)
