It is used for fish and wildlife protection, flood control, and improved navigation purposes. Construction was completed in 1928. Its normal surface area is 1 acre. It is owned by Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

Its height is 69 feet (21 m) with a length of 200 feet (61 m). Normal storage is 51 acre feet (63,000 m3). It drains an area of 0.77 square miles (2.0 km2).

The dam has a hole drilled into the bottom of it with a diameter of 4 feet (1.2 m), with a steel cage covering it for water release. Access to the dam is restricted by both a vehicular gate and chain link fence from the Sierra Madre Canyon entrance, and the San Gabriel Valley. Hikers can typically go behind the dam (illegally), where they are greeted by a rope climb up to a 20-foot (6.1 m) water fall. The west face of the canyon is gunited, prevented mudslides from filling in the canyon below.

Variant (nonofficial) names for Sierra Madre Dam: Sierra Madre 32-013 Dam.
