Sidney Breese - Black Hawk War

Black Hawk War

Following the outbreak of the Black Hawk War in 1832, Sidney volunteered for military service, enlisting as a private. He was thereafter elected a Major, and the battalion assembled at Beardstown, marching to the Illinois River near Peru. After arriving at Camp Wilborn, the Lieutenant-Colonel Theophilus W. Smith resigned for another position, and Breese was elected to fill the open position. Under his command were future Civil War General Robert Anderson and future U.S. President Zachary Taylor.

Famous quotes containing the words black, hawk and/or war:

I don’t see black people as victims even though we are exploited. Victims are flat, one- dimensional characters, someone rolled over by a steamroller so you have a cardboard person. We are far more resilient and more rounded than that. I will go on showing there’s more to us than our being victimized. Victims are dead.
    Kristin Hunter (b. 1931)

    Merry Margaret,
    As midsummer flower,
    Gentle as falcon
    Or hawk of the tower:
    John Skelton (1460?–1529)

    My curse on plays
That have to be set up in fifty ways,
On the day’s war with every knave and dolt,
    Theater business, management of men.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
