Siberian Ibex - Appearance

Appearance

Individual sizes vary greatly, from heights between 67–110 centimetres (26–43 in) and weights between 35–130 kilograms (77–290 lb). Typical colouration is a light tan with lighter undersides; in the winter, mature males becoming much darker with white patches. Both sexes have beards and horns, though the male's beard is more pronounced. While the female's horns are small, those of a mature male can grow to a length of 130 centimetres (51 in) and also have large ridges. Though recent authorities often treat it as monotypic, some have recognized four subspecies, C. s. sibirica, C. s. altaiana, C. s. hagenbecki and C. s. sakeen, based mainly on differences in total size, size of horns and colour of pelage.

Famous quotes containing the word appearance:

The whole appearance is a toy. For this,
The dove in the belly builds his nest and coos,
Selah, tempestuous bird. How is it that
The rivers shine and hold their mirrors up,
    Like excellence collecting excellence?
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

The aim of science is to apprehend this purely intelligible world as a thing in itself, an object which is what it is independently of all thinking, and thus antithetical to the sensible world.... The world of thought is the universal, the timeless and spaceless, the absolutely necessary, whereas the world of sense is the contingent, the changing and moving appearance which somehow indicates or symbolizes it.
    —R.G. (Robin George)

Hence, the less government we have, the better,—the fewer laws, and the less confided power. The antidote to this abuse of formal Government, is, the influence of private character, the growth of the Individual; the appearance of the principal to supersede the proxy; the appearance of the wise man, of whom the existing government, is, it must be owned, but a shabby imitation.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
