Sian Elias - Support For Maori Treaty Claims

Support For Maori Treaty Claims

Elias is a heroic figure among those whose passion is Maori justice and has a reputation for compassion and humanity. In 1984, she helped Nganeko Minhinnick's Manukau Harbour claim to the Waitangi Tribunal. This led to work on other treaty cases, including a claim to prevent the Government selling radio frequencies, and the case challenging the 1994 Maori electoral option. This work gave her an appreciation of Maori custom and aspirations that she still fosters among the judiciary and in her private life. In June 2003 she was involved in a landmark case which allowed for the possibility that the Maori Land Court could issue freehold title over the foreshore and seabed. The subsequent legal uncertainties and upheavals in Maoridom dominated the political agenda for the next 18 months.

Famous quotes containing the words support, maori, treaty and/or claims:

    Surely, ‘tis one step towards acting well, to think worthily of our nature; and as in common life, the way to make a man honest, is, to suppose him so ... so here, to set some value upon ourselves, enables us to support the character ... of generosity and virtue.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

    I believe, as Maori people do, that children should have more adults in their lives than just their mothers and fathers. Children need more than one or two positive role models. It is in your children’s best interest that you help them cultivate a support system that extends beyond their immediate family.
    Stephanie Marston (20th century)

    The hand that signed the treaty bred a fever,
    And famine grew, and locusts came;
    Great is the hand that holds dominion over
    Man by a scribbled name.
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)

    All claims of education notwithstanding, the pupil will accept only that which his mind craves.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)
