Short Line Reading Series

Short Line Reading Series

The Short Line Reading Series is a free literary event that takes place at The Railway Club in Vancouver, British Columbia — a venue historical for showcasing local artistic talent.

Hosted by Memewar Magazine, the Short Line is advertised as “a space where artists from different circles can connect, debate and collaborate”Empty citation‎ (help) — an idea that its organizers keep in mind while constructing diverse line-ups of readers. At each event, members from various Vancouver-based literary groups read short selections of their work (i.e. poetry, prose, essays, performance). Short Line events often include readings by prominent upcoming voices and well-established guest readers.

The Short Line began on January 9, 2007 with a reading by Michael Turner, author of Hard Core Logo and organizer of The Reading Railroad, a regular literary event of the mid-1990s, and inspiration for the founders of the Short Line.

Famous quotes containing the words short, line, reading and/or series:

A good short story is a work of art which daunts us in proportion to its brevity.... No inspiration is too noble for it; no amount of hard work is too severe for it.
    Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844–1911)

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?
    Bible: Hebrew, Job 38:4 -7.

    God, to Job.

When committees gather, each member is necessarily an actor, uncontrollably acting out the part of himself, reading the lines that identify him, asserting his identity.... We are designed, coded, it seems, to place the highest priority on being individuals, and we must do this first, at whatever cost, even if it means disability for the group.
    Lewis Thomas (b. 1913)

The theory of truth is a series of truisms.
    —J.L. (John Langshaw)
