Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal) is a splinter group of the Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal. The party was launched on June 7, 2004 and its president is Surjit Kaur Barnala (wife of senior Akali leader Surjit Singh Barnala). Prem Singh Chandumajra joined it after being denied a ticked by Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections the party contested the Patiala seat, but failed.
After Prem Singh Chandumajra's defection to SAD (B)it suffered a huge loss. In 2009 Mrs. Barnal took over to prepare the party for State Assembly Election of 2012.
