Shimane University - Location/campuses

Location/campuses

Located in Shimane Prefecture in western Honshu, the university has campuses in the Matsue City (the Prefectural capital) and Izumo City (one hour to the west of Matsue). The Matsue campus is home to the university's Law & Literature, Education, Science & Engineering, and Life & Environmental Science faculties, as well as the university's central administration. Matsue is an historical city of approximately 200,000 people sitting between Lakes Shinji and Nakaumi and approximately 20 minutes' drive from the Sea of Japan. Surrounded by mountains and criss-crossed by a network of small rivers and canals, Matsue combines the conveniences of a small/medium-sized city with the peace, tranquillity and beauty of the Japanese countryside. Matsue Castle, traditional samurai houses and several museums provide an insight into Japanese history and culture. Mount Daisen (elevation 1,700m) - an hour's drive away - offers an enjoyable day out and the opportunity to ski or snowboard. The Izumo campus is home to the university's Medical Faculty comprising the Medical School, Nursing School and University Hospital. Izumo is most famous for Izumo Taisha (arguably Japan's most famous shrine) and the World Heritage Site Iwami Ginzan silver mines.
