Shikellamy School District - Schools

Schools

  • Shikellamy High School and Middle School combined grades 7th-12th

In May 2011, the Shikellamy School Board voted to close both middle schools due to three factors: declining enrollment district wide; the need for costly, major renovations of the two middle school buildings and significant budget challenges for the foreseeable future. Beginning with the 2011-12 school year, sixth grade will be provided at each elementary school while seventh and eighth grades will be provided at the recently renovated and underutilized high school building. The superintendent reported that closing of the middle schools would save district taxpayers about $800,000. C.W. Rice Middle School enrollment was 314 (2010). Sunbury Middle School enrollment was 355 students (2010).

Famous quotes containing the word schools:

Our good schools today are much better than the best schools of yesterday. When I was your age and a pupil in school, our teachers were our enemies.
Can any thing ... be more painful to a friendly mind, than a necessity of communicating disagreeable intelligence? Indeed it is sometimes difficult to determine, whether the relator or the receiver of evil tidings is most to be pitied.
    Frances Burney (1752–1840)

The shrewd guess, the fertile hypothesis, the courageous leap to a tentative conclusion—these are the most valuable coin of the thinker at work. But in most schools guessing is heavily penalized and is associated somehow with laziness.
    Jerome S. Bruner (b. 1915)

In schools all over the world, little boys learn that their country is the greatest in the world, and the highest honor that could befall them would be to defend it heroically someday. The fact that empathy has traditionally been conditioned out of boys facilitates their obedience to leaders who order them to kill strangers.
Myriam Miedzian, U.S. author. Boys Will Be Boys, ch. 3 (1991)
