The second volume was devoted to 120 therapeutic substances intended to treat the sick, but more or less toxic. In this category, we find the ginger, peonies and cucumber. The substances of this group are described as "human."

In the last volume there are 125 entries corresponding to substances which have a violent action on physiological functions and are usually poisonous. Rhubarb, different pitted fruits and peaches are among those featured.

Famous quotes containing the word content:

Know how to be content and you will never be disgraced; practice self-restraint and you will never be in danger.
    —Chinese proverb.

    Laozi.

Nothing can or shall content my soul
Till I am evened with him, wife for wife,
Or failing so, yet that I put the Moor
At least into a jealousy so strong
    That judgment cannot cure.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Yet the New Testament treats of man and man’s so-called spiritual affairs too exclusively, and is too constantly moral and personal, to alone content me, who am not interested solely in man’s religious or moral nature, or in man even.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
