Shakespeare's Plays - Alternative Authorship Proposals

Alternative Authorship Proposals

In the past 150 years some readers of Shakespeare's works have doubted that they were written by a man with "small Latin and less Greek", believing instead that the real author must have been a highly educated person or persons. Their ideas are discussed as the Shakespeare authorship question. The scholarly consensus has always been to accept the substantial direct evidence for Shakespeare's authorship dating from 1623 and earlier.

Famous quotes containing the words alternative, authorship and/or proposals:

    No alternative to the
    one-man path.
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

The Bible is good enough for me, just the old book under which I was brought up. I do not want notes or criticisms, or explanations about authorship or origins, or even cross- references. I do not need, or understand them, and they confuse me.
    Grover Cleveland (1837–1908)

One theme links together these new proposals for family policy—the idea that the family is exceedingly durable. Changes in structure and function and individual roles are not to be confused with the collapse of the family. Families remain more important in the lives of children than other institutions. Family ties are stronger and more vital than many of us imagine in the perennial atmosphere of crisis surrounding the subject.
    Joseph Featherstone (20th century)
