Books On Sexualization

A number of books dealing with the alleged sexualization of American culture have been published by cultural critics in recent years. These generally regard inappropriate sexualization (which some refer to as pornification), particularly of women and girls, as a social problem.

In 2005, Ariel Levy published Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture, which reviews what Levy regards as a highly sexualized American culture in which women are objectified, objectify one another, and are encouraged to objectify themselves. In Pornified (2005), Pamela Paul discusses the impact of ready access to pornography on Americans. In 2007, Carol Platt Liebau published Prude: How the Sex-Obsessed Culture Damages Girls (and America, Too!) which looks at sex in contemporary culture and the havoc it creates in young girls. In 2008, Meenakshi Gigi Durham published The Lolita Effect: The Media Sexualization of Young Girls and What We Can Do About It, which looks at media messges that promote early maturation and sexualisation of pre-adolescent girls. In 2008, Patrice A. Oppliger wrote Girls Gone Skank: The Sexualization of Girls in America, in which she discusses issues women face in American society and how those issues reflect on young girls and teens. In 2009, Sarracino & Scott published The Porning of America. The Rise of Porn Culture, What It Means, and Where We Go from Here, in which they argue that pornography has become mainstream part of American culture. In 2011, Tanith Carey published Where Has My Little Girl Gone? How to Protect Your Daughter From Growing Up Too Soon, the first guide for parents on girls' body image and other issues.
