Sexuality and Disability - Sexual Harassment, Assault, and Domestic Violence

Sexual Harassment, Assault, and Domestic Violence

People with disabilities are as vulnerable as anyone to the problems that accompany sexual relationships. These problems include harassment, assault, and domestic violence. People with disabilities are more vulnerable to sexual assault than the general public, being targeted due to the physical or mental impairments that they have. The American Journal of Preventive Medicine has published results of a survey that found that males with disabilities are 4 times more likely to be sexually abused. Other studies have shown that for women with disabilities, "regardless of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or class are assaulted, raped, and abused at a rate two times greater than women without disabilities risk of being physically assaulted for an adult with developmental disabilities is 4-10 times higher than for other adults".

Famous quotes containing the words domestic and/or violence:

“In great misfortunes,” he told himself, “people want to be alone. They have a right to be. And the misfortunes that occur within one are the greatest. Surely the saddest thing in the world is falling out of love—if once one has ever fallen in.”
Falling out, for him, seemed to mean falling out of all domestic and social relations, out of his place in the human family, indeed.
    Willa Cather (1873–1947)

A man who lives with nature is used to violence and is companionable with death. There is more violence in an English hedgerow than in the meanest streets of a great city.
