Seven Island Lake Nature Reserve (Polish: Rezerwat przyrody Jezioro Siedmiu Wysp) is a nature reserve established in 1956 around Oświn lake in north-eastern Poland, close to the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. The reserve is in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in Gmina Węgorzewo (part of Węgorzewo County).
The area is an important breeding ground for water birds, and is both a Ramsar site (one of 13 such sites in Poland) and a Natura 2000 site. The reserve covers an area of approximately 10 square kilometres (3.9 sq mi), consisting of about 3.5 km² of water bodies, 6 km² of marshland and 0.5 km² of forest.
Famous quotes containing the words island, lake, nature and/or reserve:
“I should like to have seen a gallery of coronation beauties, at Westminster Abbey, confronted for a moment by this band of Island girls; their stiffness, formality, and affectation contrasted with the artless vivacity and unconcealed natural graces of these savage maidens. It would be the Venus de Medici placed beside a milliners doll.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
“These beginnings of commerce on a lake in the wilderness are very interesting,these larger white birds that come to keep company with the gulls.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“But, when to Sin our byast Nature leans,
The careful Devil is still at hand with means;
And providently Pimps for ill desires:
The Good Old Cause, revivd, a Plot requires,
Plots, true or false, are necessary things,
To raise up Common-wealths and ruine Kings.”
—John Dryden (16311700)
“Common experience is the gold reserve which confers an exchange value on the currency which words are; without this reserve of shared experiences, all our pronouncements are cheques drawn on insufficient funds.”
—René Daumal (19081944)
