  • Kitzmiller et al. v. Dover Area School District is the first direct challenge brought in United States federal courts against a public school district that tried to mandate the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to evolution.   • Researchers at Ohio State University have shown that single nucleotide polymorphism A118G in the gene encoding the brain's mu opioid receptor protein makes individuals more susceptible to alcoholism and narcotic drug addiction. When the gene contains this polymorphism this reduces the number of receptors produced by the brain, making brain cells more vulnerable to the effects of addictive drugs. (EurekAlert!)
