Famous quotes containing the word selfishness:

Slavery is founded in the selfishness of man’s nature—opposition to it, is [in?] his love of justice.... Repeal the Missouri compromise—repeal all compromises—repeal the declaration of independence—repeal all past history, you still can not repeal human nature. It still will be the abundance of man’s heart, that slavery extension is wrong; and out of the abundance of his heart, his mouth will continue to speak.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

I can only say that I have acted upon my best convictions without selfishness or malice, and that by the help of God, I shall continue to do so.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

The real sufferings of their she condition?
Man’s very sympathy with their estate
Has much of selfishness and more suspicion.
Their love, their virtue, beauty, education,
But form good housekeepers, to breed a nation.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
