Seikilos Epitaph - Dedication

Dedication

The last two words on the tombstone are Σείκιλος Εὐτέρ, Seikilos Euter meaning "(from) Seikilos to Euterpe"; hence the tombstone and the epigrams thereon were dedicated from Seikilos to his (most probably) wife Euterpe.

Famous quotes containing the word dedication:

It is difficult for me to imagine the same dedication to women’s rights on the part of the kind of man who lives in partnership with someone he likes and respects, and the kind of man who considers breast-augmentation surgery self-improvement.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

A friend of mine spoke of books that are dedicated like this: “To my wife, by whose helpful criticism ...” and so on. He said the dedication should really read: “To my wife. If it had not been for her continual criticism and persistent nagging doubt as to my ability, this book would have appeared in Harper’s instead of The Hardware Age.”
    Brenda Ueland (1891–1985)
