Competition
From the 2012–13 season on, there are 22 clubs in the Segunda Liga, up from 16 in the previous seasons. During the course of a season, each club plays all teams twice — once at their home stadium and once at their opponent's — for a total of 42 games. At the end of each season, the two top teams are promoted to Primeira Liga, the three lowest placed teams are relegated to the Portuguese Second Division, and the top three teams from the Second Division are promoted to the Segunda Liga.

Famous quotes containing the word competition:
“Knowledge in the form of an informational commodity indispensable to productive power is already, and will continue to be, a majorperhaps the majorstake in the worldwide competition for power. It is conceivable that the nation-states will one day fight for control of information, just as they battled in the past for control over territory, and afterwards for control over access to and exploitation of raw materials and cheap labor.”
—Jean François Lyotard (b. 1924)
“The elements of success in this business do not differ from the elements of success in any other. Competition is keen and bitter. Advertising is as large an element as in any other business, and since the usual avenues of successful exploitation are closed to the profession, the adage that the best advertisement is a pleased customer is doubly true for this business.”
—Madeleine [Blair], U.S. prostitute and madam. Madeleine, ch. 5 (1919)
“Like many businessmen of genius he learned that free competition was wasteful, monopoly efficient. And so he simply set about achieving that efficient monopoly.”
—Mario Puzo (b. 1920)
