Security Industry Authority

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is the organisation responsible for regulating the private security industry in the UK. It is a non-departmental public body reporting to the Home Secretary and was established in 2003 under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

The SIA has two main duties. One is the compulsory licensing of individuals undertaking designated activities within the private security industry; the other is to manage a voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme, which measures private security suppliers against independently assessed criteria.

Famous quotes containing the words security, industry and/or authority:

    I think the girl who is able to earn her own living and pay her own way should be as happy as anybody on earth. The sense of independence and security is very sweet.
    Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906)

    He had much industry at setting out,
    Much boisterous courage, before loneliness
    Had driven him crazed;
    For meditations upon unknown thought
    Make human intercourse grow less and less....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    Contact with men who wield power and authority still leaves an intangible sense of repulsion. It’s very like being in close proximity to faecal matter, the faecal embodiment of something unmentionable, and you wonder what it is made of and when it acquired its historically sacred character.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
