Sectarian Violence - Concept

Concept

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute:

Traditionally, sectarian violence implies a symmetrical confrontation between two or more non-state actors representing different population groups.

Sectarian violence differs from the concept of race riot. It may involve the dynamics of social polarization, the balkanization of a geographic area along the lines of self identifying groups, and protracted social conflict.

Some of the possible inputs for sectarian violence include power struggles, political climate, social climate, cultural climate, and economic landscape.

  • economic - capitalism and collectivism
  • political - communist and nationalist
  • Christianity - Catholic and Protestant
  • Inter Religion - Muslim and Christian
  • Islam - Shia and Sunni

Famous quotes containing the word concept:

To find the length of an object, we have to perform certain
physical operations. The concept of length is therefore fixed when the operations by which length is measured are fixed: that is, the concept of length involves as much as and nothing more than the set of operations by which length is determined.
    Percy W. Bridgman (1882–1961)

Revolution as an ideal concept always preserves the essential content of the original thought: sudden and lasting betterment.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

Terror is as much a part of the concept of truth as runniness is of the concept of jam. We wouldn’t like jam if it didn’t, by its very nature, ooze. We wouldn’t like truth if it wasn’t sticky, if, from time to time, it didn’t ooze blood.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
