Schierstein Bridge - Proposed New Construction

Proposed New Construction

Under current plans, a new three-lane bridge will be built downstream and parallel to the existing bridge between the Äppelallee and Gonsenheim interchanges. The Mombach interchange will likewise be connected. After the completion of the "New Schiersteiner Bridge", the old bridge will be demolished. Its pillars will remain and will support another three-lane bridge. The plans are required to include protection of the Mainz Sand Dunes nature reserve, an important source of food for the area’s white storks.

A design competition was held for the new bridge. In December 2007, it was announced that the competition was won by a joint-venture of the engineering firm Grontmij BGS and the architectural firm of Ferdinand Heide. The design calls for continuous partially arched box-section girders for the new 1285 m long bridge. According to plan, the first bridge would be completed by 2015 and the second by 2018. The project, including the new bridge and the expansion of the A 643 to six lanes to Mainz Triangle, is expected to cost 250 million euros.

Famous quotes containing the words proposed and/or construction:

On the 31st of August, 1846, I left Concord in Massachusetts for Bangor and the backwoods of Maine,... I proposed to make excursions to Mount Ktaadn, the second highest mountain in New England, about thirty miles distant, and to some of the lakes of the Penobscot, either alone or with such company as I might pick up there.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

When the leaders choose to make themselves bidders at an auction of popularity, their talents, in the construction of the state, will be of no service. They will become flatterers instead of legislators; the instruments, not the guides, of the people.
    Edmund Burke (1729–1797)
