1980-1997: Commercial Decline and 7-year Hiatus

The 1980s started relatively brightly for Santana, with 1981's platinum-selling Zebop!, which also reached the top 20 in several countries, and continued the more conventional rock sound. The following year, Shango was released, however this album marked a steep decline in the band's commercial fortunes, although it achieved gold status. The group waited another 3 years to release the follow-up, the longest break for them so far. 1985's Beyond Appearances, was a commercial failure, and their first album not to achieve gold certification. Their following 3 releases all confounded this commercial decline, with the last of these failing to break the Bilboard top 100. In the midst of this commercial pitfall, the band stopped touring and recording material for an unprecedented seven years.

Famous quotes containing the words commercial, decline and/or hiatus:

So by all means let’s have a television show quick and long, even if the commercial has to be delivered by a man in a white coat with a stethoscope hanging around his neck, selling ergot pills. After all the public is entitled to what it wants, isn’t it? The Romans knew that and even they lasted four hundred years after they started to putrefy.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

But only that soul can be my friend which I encounter on the line of my own march, that soul to which I do not decline, and which does not decline me, but, native of the same celestial latitude, repeats in its own all my experience.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

... Ma hiatus between two nothings— ...
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
