Athletic Tradition
Santa Clara High School has a long history of success in its sports programs, most notably its basketball program. In its storied history since Coach Lou Cvijanovich took the helm in 1958, the boy's basketball program has won 30 league titles (most league titles of any high school program in the country), 15 CIF titles (second most in California high school history), as well as 3 California State Championships (1989, 1990 & 1999). The program appeared in three straight state championship games (1989,1990 & 1991), winning in 1989 and 1990 and losing in 1991. In 1999, Lou Cvijanovich announced that after 41 years of coaching the basketball program, he would be retiring at the end of the season. The 1999 team went on to win the state title, winning 30 games and Coach Cvijanovich's record 829th victory in the process.

Famous quotes containing the words athletic and/or tradition:
“Short of a wholesale reform of college athleticsa complete breakdown of the whole system that is now focused on money and powerthe womens programs are just as doomed as the mens are to move further and further away from the academic mission of their colleges.... We have to decide if thats the kind of success for womens sports that we want.”
—Christine H. B. Grant, U.S. university athletic director. As quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education, p. A42 (May 12, 1993)
“Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classesour ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking around.”
—Gilbert Keith Chesterton (18741936)
