Sankt Julian - History

Coins and bricks found near Eschenau show that there was a settlement at what is now Sankt Julian as long ago as AD 360. archaeological finds made at Sankt Julian bear witness to settlers in La Tène times (450 BC). There was also a settlement here in Roman times. Bearing witness to this are Roman soldiers’ and traders’ graves along with gold coins from Emperor Constantine’s time. In the Middle Ages, Sankt Julian was a pilgrimage centre (relics of Saint Joan). The Evangelical church’s tower comes from the 11th century. An old oilmill from the 18th century with wooden wheels and works is still standing.

The municipality of Sankt Julian was newly formed on 7 June 1969 out of the municipalities of Eschenau, Gumbsweiler and St. Julian.
