Sanamahism - Form of Worship - Deities Worshiped

Deities Worshiped

There is reference to the worship of Sanamahi by King Kangba in the Hayi age. Manipur is a land of deities with Atiya Shidaba as the Supreme God.

Atiya Shidaba, Apanba and Asheeba are the three manifestations or incarnations of God as the creator, the preserver and the annihilator of this universe respectively. Pakhangba, Sannamahi and Nongpok Ningthou are the incarnations who play the role of the male deities of the Meeteis whereas Leimarel Shidabi and Panthoibi, the role of female deities.

Panthoibi is the Mother of the Universe and Nongpok Ningthou is her mate. Besides these, three hundred and sixty four deities with their consorts are the most important deities worshipped by the Meeteis.

The Plain Kabui are observed in worship of Sanamahi and Ima Leimarel.

Sanamahi (also known as Aseeba) has a creator brother (like him) named Pakhangba (Konjin Tukthapa).

Famous quotes containing the words deities and/or worshiped:

The cloud was so dark that it needed all the bright lights that could be turned upon it. But for four years there was a contagion of nobility in the land, and the best blood North and South poured itself out a libation to propitiate the deities of Truth and Justice. The great sin of slavery was washed out, but at what a cost!
    M. E. W. Sherwood (1826–1903)

It seems to me that the god that is commonly worshiped in civilized countries is not at all divine, though he bears a divine name, but is the overwhelming authority and respectability of mankind combined. Men reverence one another, not yet God.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
