San Giacomo (Valle Castellana) - Pastures

Pastures

The area surrounding San Giocaomo was once used primarily for sheep grazing. Three shelters, known as 'caciare' remain. They were built of stone without the addition of cement and are reminiscent of the famous trulli in the Italian region of Puglia. The caciare not only served as shelter for the sheepherders but were also used to protect the young lambs and for the storage of the locally produced cheeses made from the sheep's milk.

Famous quotes containing the word pastures:

And, by the way, who estimates the value of the crop which nature yields in the still wilder fields unimproved by man? The crop of English hay is carefully weighed, the moisture calculated, the silicates and the potash; but in all dells and pond-holes in the woods and pastures and swamps grows a rich and various crop only unreaped by man.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

What should we think of the shepherd’s life if his flocks always wandered to higher pastures than his thoughts?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The forest waves, the morning breaks,
The pastures sleep, ripple the lakes,
Leaves twinkle, flowers like persons be
And life pulsates in rock or tree.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
