San Diego Jewish Academy

The San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) is a private, independent Jewish day school currently located in the Carmel Valley community of San Diego, California. The school is composed of two schools: Golda Meir Lower School for grades K-5 and Maimonides Upper School for grades 6-12. SDJA also opened a Reggio-inspired preschool in 2011.

SDJA’s curriculum is based around Torah (study, learning) Avodah (worship, service) and Gemilut Hasidim (acts of loving kindness). As a pluralistic Jewish day school, SDJA is not affiliated with any one synagogue or movement of Judaism.

SDJA began as a small neighborhood school in rented facilities on the property of Congregation Tifereth Israel in 1979. In 1999, San Diego Jewish Academy built a 40-acre campus in Carmel Valley. The campus has expanded to 47 acres after a donation by Irving and Eleanor Jaffe of Boca Raton, Fla., 3 acres of which were turned into athletic fields. The campus also includes a newly built gym that opened in 1996.

Famous quotes containing the words san, jewish and/or academy:

Today, San Francisco has experienced a double tragedy of incredible proportions. As acting mayor, I order an immediate state of mourning in our city. The city and county of San Francisco must and will pull itself together at this time. We will carry on as best as we possibly can.... I think we all have to share the same sense of shame and the same sense of outrage.
    Dianne Feinstein (b. 1933)

Dr. Craigle: A good man, completely reliable. Not given to overcharging and stringing visits out, the way some do.
Phil Green: Do you mean the way some doctors do or do you mean the way some Jewish doctors do?
Dr. Craigle: I suppose you’re right. I suppose some of us do it, too. Not just the Chosen People.
    Moss Hart (1904–1961)

When the State wishes to endow an academy or university, it grants it a tract of forest land: one saw represents an academy, a gang, a university.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
