A Changing East Flatbush, A Changing Tilden
Tilden High School's demographics continued to change into the 1970s and 1980s paralleling changes in the surrounding neighborhood, East Flatbush. The neighborhood saw increased immigration from the Caribbean. Media coverage of Samuel J. Tilden also changed, with a focus on incidents of violence. Although crime had become a problem in East Flatbush, the media coverage prompted the then principal Everett Kerner to state that the high school was getting a "bum rap.”

Famous quotes containing the words changing and/or east:
“The Mediterranean has the color of mackerel, changeable I mean. You dont always know if it is green or violet, you cant even say its blue, because the next moment the changing reflection has taken on a tint of rose or gray.”
—Vincent Van Gogh (18531890)
“The East is marvellously interesting for tracing our steps back. But for going forward, it is nothing. All it can hope for is to be fertilised by Europe, so that it can start on a new phase.”
