Some who claimed he was ideologically similar to United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia nicknamed him "Scalito," (a portmanteau of "Scalia" and "Alito" that appears to have originated in a 1992 National Law Journal article). The National Italian American Foundation has claimed the use of the "Scalito" nickname "marginalizes outstanding record."
