In some geographical areas Microsoft's MTP may be installed in firmware, requiring the use of Microsoft Windows or another operating system supporting MTP to be used; in others the device supports UMS, and works as USB storage, allowing music files to be transferred under any operating system with USB support. Samsung seems to be moving towards supporting MTP only. However in these devices it is possible to replace MTP by UMS firmware, although this is not straightforward for the YP-U3.
