Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHIATS), (Hindi: सैम हिग्गि्नबॉटम कृषि, प्रौद्योगिकी एवं विज्ञान संस्थान) formerly Allahabad Agricultural Institute is a government aided deemed university located in Allahabad, India. The institute was established in 1910 with the objective of improving the economic status of rural population. In 1942 it became the first institute in India to offer a degree in Agricultural Engineering. Since its inception, the institute has produced many notable scientists and agricultural engineers.
The academic structure of the university is made up of Faculties and Schools. There are nine Faculties, each of which is divided into a number of Schools, containing a total of 78 academic departments and 2 research centres, with a strong emphasis on scientific, agricultural and technological education and research.
The institute was conferred deemed university status on 15 March 2000. Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India also certified SHIATS as a Christian Minority Educational Institution. In 2009 Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and in 2010 Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) accredited the university. While having completed its own hospital, Hayes Memorial Mission Hospital, the university is in the process of starting a Medical College as per Medical Council of India (MCI) norms.
