History
The school was established in 1991. Saint Louis University has the only accredited School of Public Health in the state of Missouri and is one of just 39 schools of public health accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health(CEPH).
The school began offering undergraduate degrees in 2009. The School currently offers 3 degrees in Public Health, Emergency Management, and Health Management. The offering of public health degrees at the undergraduate level is relatively new, yet in high demand. Thus, SLU has been at the forefront of this new advancement in the field. The first universities to offer such programs cited problems with too high demand and lack of resources, one university touting 500 students waitlisted for the program. SLU had similar success with its program, enrolling only 7 students in 2009, but growing to 61 students in 2010 and 131 students in 2011.
The school hopes to have similar results as it introduces a B.S. in Emergency Management in Fall 2012. Like Public Health, emergency management at the undergraduate level is fairly new. While many universities offer concentrations in the field, SLU is one of 35 to offer an undergraduate degree.
