History

The organisation was started in 2001 by Paul Smith, who described himself as an 'advanced motorist and road safety enthusiast' and a former computer electronics engineer which ran from Smith's home in Scotland as a hobby for some time until 2003 when he closed his computer engineering business and ran Safe Speed full time following a heart attack. Famous quotes containing the word history:

In the history of the United States, there is no continuity at all. You can cut through it anywhere and nothing on this side of the cut has anything to do with anything on the other side.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

I feel as tall as you.
Ellis Meredith, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 14, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.
    Umberto Eco (b. 1932)
