Controls
In the SAE control pattern, the left hand controls swing (left-right) and dipper (in-out), and the right hand controls the boom (up-down) and bucket (curl-uncurl).
- Left hand left = swing left.
- Left hand right = swing right.
- Left hand forward = boom down.
- Left hand back = boom up.
- Right hand left = bucket curl.
- Right hand right = bucket uncurl.
- Right hand forward = dipper out away from operator.
- Right hand back = dipper in toward operator.

“Ask anyone committed to Marxist analysis how many angels on the head of a pin, and you will be asked in return to never mind the angels, tell me who controls the production of pins.”
—Joan Didion (b. 1934)
“Weve got to figure these things a little bit different than most people. Yknow, theres something about going out in a plane that beats any other way.... A guy that washes out at the controls of his own ship, well, he goes down doing the thing that he loved the best. It seems to me that thats a very special way to die.”
—Dalton Trumbo (19051976)
“The confusion of emotions with behavior causes no end of unnecessary trouble to both adults and children. Behavior can be commanded; emotions cant. An adult can put controls on a childs behaviorat least part of the timebut how do you put controls on what a child feels? An adult can impose controls on his own behaviorif hes grown upbut how does he order what he feels?”
—Leontine Young (20th century)
