S (New York City Subway Service)

Three services in the New York City Subway are designated as a dark slate gray S (shuttle). These are short services that connect passengers to longer services:

  • Franklin Avenue Shuttle (internally referred to as the S)
  • 42nd Street Shuttle (also called the Grand Central/Times Square Shuttle) (internally referred to as the 0)
  • Rockaway Park Shuttle (also called Rockaway Shuttle) (internally referred to as the H)

The following services run as shuttles during off hours but retain their regular service designations:

  • 5 late nights (Dyre Avenue Shuttle), originally SS
  • A late nights (Lefferts Boulevard Shuttle)
  • M weekends and late nights (Myrtle Avenue Shuttle), originally SS
  • R late nights (Bay Ridge/Fourth Avenue Shuttle)

Famous quotes containing the words york, city and/or subway:

Celebrity distorts democracy by giving the rich, beautiful, and famous more authority than they deserve.
Maureen Dowd, U.S. journalist. The New York Times, “Giant Puppet Show,” (September 10, 1995)

Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion.
    —E.B. (Elwyn Brooks)

In New York—whose subway trains in particular have been “tattooed” with a brio and an energy to put our own rude practitioners to shame—not an inch of free space is spared except that of advertisements.... Even the most chronically dispossessed appear prepared to endorse the legitimacy of the “haves.”
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. “Cleaning and Cleansing,” Myths and Memories (1986)
