Ruth Fertel - Ruth's Chris Steak House

Ruth's Chris Steak House

In 1965 Fertel, a divorced mother of two, found a classified ad offering a restaurant for sale. She mortgaged her house to purchase the restaurant, the original Chris's steakhouse. In 1976 a fire forced her to relocate. Terms of her purchase agreement prevented her from using the name "Chris's Restaurant" anywhere but the original location, prompting the restaurant to be renamed "Ruth's Chris." The same year, Fertel agreed to issue her first franchise. The franchise chain spread rapidly over the next two decades, earning Fertel a number of accolades as an entrepreneur. She died at age 75.

Famous quotes containing the words chris, steak and/or house:

When I get all these accolades for being true to myself, I say, “Who else can I be? I can’t be Chris Evert.”
    Martina Navratilova (b. 1956)

Being American is to eat a lot of beef steak, and boy, we’ve got a lot more beef steak than any other country, and that’s why you ought to be glad you’re an American. And people have started looking at these big hunks of bloody meat on their plates, you know, and wondering what on earth they think they’re doing.
    Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (b. 1922)

It could be clearly proved that by a practical nullification [by the South] of the Fifteenth Amendment the Republicans have for several years been deprived of a majority in both the House and Senate. The failure of the South to faithfully observe the Fifteenth Amendment is the cause of the failure of all efforts towards complete pacification. It is on this hook that the bloody shirt now hangs.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
