Generally, the backline consists of smaller and faster players. A University of Technology, Sydney study of the movement patterns of a team's players in games during the 2010 NRL season compared forwards and backs. It found that the mean total distances covered and the average number of occurrences in high-intensity running (> 18 km/h) was higher for backs than forwards.
