January Short Term
Roycemore's Upper School students are required to participate in January Short Term, a three week interim period between the first and second semesters. Students are given the option of participating in faculty led projects, or are provided with the guidance necessary to develop individual projects in an area of personal interest. Many January Short Term projects take advantage of the Chicago area's resources. Some students undertake internships throughout the United States, as well as overseas. All students are required to submit proposals for approval and to keep a record of their progress during the term. Proposals are reviewed by a committee of faculty and Upper School students.

Famous quotes containing the words january, short and/or term:
“and you undid the reins
and I undid the buttons,
the bones, the confusions,
The New England postcards,
the January ten oclock night,
and we rose up like wheat....”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
“Give a scientist a problem and he will probably provide a solution; historians and sociologists, by contrast, can offer only opinions. Ask a dozen chemists the composition of an organic compound such as methane, and within a short time all twelve will have come up with the same solution of CH4. Ask, however, a dozen economists or sociologists to provide policies to reduce unemployment or the level of crime and twelve widely differing opinions are likely to be offered.”
—Derek Gjertsen, British scientist, author. Science and Philosophy: Past and Present, ch. 3, Penguin (1989)
“As the term of my relief from this place [Washington, D.C.] approaches, its drudgery becomes more nauseating and intolerable, and my impatience to be with you at Monticello increases daily.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
