Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry - Boer War

Boer War

During the Boer War of 1899–1901 the Imperial Yeomanry was raised to permit Yeomen to serve overseas. The RWY provided three companies to this force (1st, 2nd and 63rd). In 1900 the regiment represented the Yeomanry cavalry at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia.

On 17 April 1901, the regiment was renamed as the Royal Wiltshire Imperial Yeomanry (Prince of Wales's Own Royal Regiment) and reorganised in four squadrons and a machine gun section. On 1 April 1908, the regiment was renamed as the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry (Prince of Wales's Own Royal Regiment) and transfered to the Territorial Force, trained and equipped as hussars. Its organisation was:

Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry (Prince of Wales's Own Royal Regiment) (Hussars)
HQ Chippenham
A Squadron Warminster
B Squadron Chirton
C Squadron Chippenham
D Squadron Swindon

It was ranked 1st (of 55) in the order of precedence of the Yeomanry Regiments in the Army List of 1914.

Famous quotes containing the word war:

Come Vitus, are we men, or are we children? Of what use are all these melodramatic gestures? You say your soul was killed, and that you have been dead all these years. And what of me? Did we not both die here in Marmaros fifteen years ago? Are we any the less victims of the war than those whose bodies were torn asunder? Are we not both the living dead?
Peter Ruric, and Edgar G. Ulmer. Hjalmar Poelzig (Boris Karloff)
