Royal Adelaide Golf Club

The Royal Adelaide Golf Club (often referred to as Seaton) is a private golf club in Adelaide, South Australia. It is widely acknowledged as ranking with the best in Australia, and has a world ranking that fluctuates around 50.

Despite many alterations made since the first blow was struck on it 98 years ago, it retains its distinctive character of a comparatively open links course, an attribute by no means common in this country. It is this character which members and visitors alike recognise as a priceless asset in a golf course situated so close to a major city. Royal Adelaide has played host to the Australian Open nine times, with the most recent being in 1998 when Greg Chalmers took home the trophy, carding an even 288.

Taken as a whole, the Seaton course, with its wide open spaces, poses more problems than appear at first sight, except under the most benign conditions. Most members are more than happy to complete their round having played to their handicaps.

In the 2008 golf digest rankings Royal Adelaide was ranked number 5 a drop of 1 from the previous year.

Famous quotes containing the words royal, golf and/or club:

The Royal Navy of England hath ever been its greatest defence and ornament; it is its ancient and natural strength; the floating bulwark of the island.
    William Blackstone (1723–1780)

Years ago we discovered the exact point, the dead center of middle age. It occurs when you are too young to take up golf and too old to rush up to the net.
    Franklin Pierce Adams (1881–1960)

Of course we women gossip on occasion. But our appetite for it is not as avid as a man’s. It is in the boys’ gyms, the college fraternity houses, the club locker rooms, the paneled offices of business that gossip reaches its luxuriant flower.
    Phyllis McGinley (1905–1978)
