Roy Fisher - Life

Life

Fisher was born in Handsworth, Birmingham and studied at the University of Birmingham. His early work, including City (1961), a work in which he applies the lessons of Williams' Paterson to the city of Birmingham, was admired in the United States but more or less ignored in his native country. It was because of the negative connotations for outsiders of "Birmingham" that the city's name did not once appear in his early long poem City . In 2005 Roy Fisher was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Famous quotes containing the word life:

The time comes when each one of us has to give up as illusions the expectations which, in his youth, he pinned upon his fellow- men, and when he may learn how much difficulty and pain has been added to his life by their ill-will.
    Sigmund Freud (1856–1939)

Parents are led to believe that they must be consistent, that is, always respond to the same issue the same way. Consistency is good up to a point but your child also needs to understand context and subtlety . . . much of adult life is governed by context: what is appropriate in one setting is not appropriate in another; the way something is said may be more important than what is said. . . .
    Stanley I. Greenspan (20th century)

What a life! True life is elsewhere. We are not in the world.
    Arthur Rimbaud (1854–1891)
