Public Programs On The Greenway

Public programs and events on the Greenway are designed to attract residents, workers and visitors to interact and enjoy the beauty of the parks. The Conservancy partners with cultural institutions and non-profit organizations to create events geared toward multi-generational and multi-cultural audiences. Recent events have included the FIGMENT participatory art festival, Boston Local Food Fest, Boston-NY Food Truck Throwdown, Summer on the Waterfront, and Berklee College of Music Concert Series. In 2011, the Conservancy organized over 200 free events, and more than 350 are planned for 2012. The Greenway celebrated for drawing crowds with its nationally acclaimed Mobile Eats Program, free Wi-Fi, concerts, markets, and more.

Sustainable Horticulture - The Conservancy uses organic and sustainable landscape practices for a resilient, healthy environment for park users. The Greenway is Boston’s only organically maintained Public Park and one of a handful of organically maintained urban parks in the United States. Organic maintenance means no expenditures for toxic chemicals, and lower expenditures for watering. Plants are healthier, more resilient, and better able to withstand the wear of public use. The Conservancy’s practice of using composting and compost tea instead of herbicides and toxins also ensures that run-off from the parks will not pollute Boston Harbor or harm the delicate marine life. Children and pets can freely and safely play on our park lawns without the worry of pesticides.

Green & Grow is the Conservancy’s Youth Workforce Development Program. The program engages young adults, ages 16–20, in the science and management behind field work on the Greenway. Since the beginning of the program, 100% of program graduates have completed a successful transition by enrolling in higher education or gaining full or part-time jobs with employers like the National Park Service, Branching Out, MA Department of Conservation and Recreation, Emerald Necklace Conservancy, Save the Harbor Save the Bay, and the Greenway Conservancy’s own park operations team.

Famous quotes containing the words public and/or programs:

Take example by your father, my boy, and be very careful o’ widders all your life, specially if they’ve kept a public house, Sammy.
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)

There is a delicate balance of putting yourself last and not being a doormat and thinking of yourself first and not coming off as selfish, arrogant, or bossy. We spend the majority of our lives attempting to perfect this balance. When we are successful, we have many close, healthy relationships. When we are unsuccessful, we suffer the natural consequences of damaged and sometimes broken relationships. Children are just beginning their journey on this important life lesson.
