East of Ronkonkoma Service Controversy

The LIRR has tried to discontinue service east of Ronkonkoma on several occasions, citing minimal service (three trains daily) due to low ridership. New York State has declined this request each time, as Long Island's population continues to grow eastward. As recently as 2010, the idea was once again entertained by the financially strapped MTA (the LIRR's parent company), who proposed that service be truncated to summer weekends only. This did not happen, but weekend service outside of the summer (defined as Memorial Day-Columbus Day) was discontinued.

Famous quotes containing the words east, service and/or controversy:

An inexperienced heraldist resembles a medieval traveler who brings back from the East the faunal fantasies influenced by the domestic bestiary he possessed all along rather than by the results of direct zoological exploration.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)

This was a great point gained; the archdeacon would certainly not come to morning service at Westminster Abbey, even though he were in London; and here the warden could rest quietly, and, when the time came, duly say his prayers.
    Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)

Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but I’m not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
