Romani Culture - Indian Heritage

Indian Heritage

Research, including genetically-based research from 2012, has established that the ancestors of Romani people lived in the northwestern part of India and were forced to leave the area as a group following an unidentifiable incident that is possibly related to Islamic invasions during the same period of time or a natural disaster.

The traditional occupations that the Roma people were most well known for were music, craftsmanship, military and fortune-telling.

Famous quotes containing the words indian and/or heritage:

The Indian remarked as before, “Must have hard wood to cook moose-meat,” as if that were a maxim, and proceeded to get it. My companion cooked some in California fashion, winding a long string of the meat round a stick and slowly turning it in his hand before the fire. It was very good. But the Indian, not approving of the mode, or because he was not allowed to cook it his own way, would not taste it.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Flowers ... that are so pathetic in their beauty, frail as the clouds, and in their colouring as gorgeous as the heavens, had through thousands of years been the heritage of children—honoured as the jewellery of God only by them—when suddenly the voice of Christianity, counter-signing the voice of infancy, raised them to a grandeur transcending the Hebrew throne, although founded by God himself, and pronounced Solomon in all his glory not to be arrayed like one of these.
    Thomas De Quincey (1785–1859)
