Famous quotes containing the words rocky, boy, indian and/or reservation:
“Luckily for us, now that steam has narrowed the Atlantic to a strait, the nervous, rocky West is intruding a new and continental element into the national mind, as we shall yet have an American genius.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Mother love has been much maligned. An over mothered boy may go through life expecting each new woman to love him the way his mother did. Her love may make any other love seem inadequate. But an unloved boy would be even more likely to idealize love. I dont think its possible for a mother or father to love a child too much.
”
—Frank Pittman (20th century)
“We crossed a deep and wide bay which makes eastward north of Kineo, leaving an island on our left, and keeping to the eastern side of the lake. This way or that led to some Tomhegan or Socatarian stream, up which the Indian had hunted, and whither I longed to go. The last name, however, had a bogus sound, too much like sectarian for me, as if a missionary had tampered with it; but I knew that the Indians were very liberal. I think I should have inclined to the Tomhegan first.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Music is so much a part of their daily lives that if an Indian visits another reservation one of the first questions asked on his return is: What new songs did you learn?”
—Federal Writers Project Of The Wor, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
