And I spend all my time weaving garlands of flowers with my fair hands, to please me when I stand before the mirror; my sister Rachel sits all the day long before her own, and never moves away. She loves to contemplate her lovely eyes; I love to use my hands to adorn myself: her joy is in reflection, mine in act.
    Dante Alighieri (1265–1321)

The “control of nature” is a phrase conceived in arrogance, born of the Neanderthal age of biology and the convenience of man.
    —Rachel Carson (1907–1964)

America is the world’s policeman, all right—a big, dumb, mick flatfoot in the middle of the one thing cops dread most, a “domestic disturbance.”
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

We have passed the time of ... the laisser-faire [sic] school which believes that the government ought to do nothing but run a police force.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
